Dance in Commercials

Grade 11

As our dancers continued to explore non-traditional performance means and alternate methods of communicating through dance, we became intrigued by the power & possibilities of dance used in commercials & PSA’s. After researching & reviewing a wide variety of professional examples, each dancer set out to make their own commercial / PSA that utilized dance as a primary messaging / marketing device. From picking a product, to drafting a proposal & production plan, to creating & executing choreography, to filming & editing - here are some samples of their final work.

Juneteenth Celebration & Expression Project

Grades 7 & 12

Tying into our continuing themes of personal identity & expression and building from earlier work that has cultivated the creative use of atypical performance elements, our dancers created short movement message statements about Juneteenth. Dancers drafted personal expressions & remembrances that summed up their individualized definition & experience of Juneteenth. This text was refined to become short spoken word pieces that the dancers then used as audio accompaniment for the matching movement phrases that they created to embody & illustrate their understanding of this cultural celebration.

From their homes in September, the High School Dancers created choreography based on the My Name, My Identity initiative. They developed their own personal/artist statement and created choreography based on that. Some also added in the element of their voice.
